John Cole has always had a keen interest in design. After studying first engineering and later graphic design at Virginia Tech, he worked as a graphic designer for a prominent general contracting firm in the Washington DC area. While this work paid the bills and suited his practical nature, it was his role as coordinator and art director for the firm’s architectural photo shoots where John began to discover his true calling. Through photography, it appeared that his practical side had finally found a way to feed the creative beast.

After deciding to make photography the focus of his career he packed up his camera and headed out to Montana for photography training at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography. He has also worked as an assistant to many of the best photographers in the DC area to fine tune his craft and business.

John’s photography has a strong graphic quality that draws on his formal art training, his technical expertise, and his experience as an art director and coordinator. He approaches every new project with a desire to clearly demonstrate his client’s design intent in a collaborative fashion. Understanding that coming away with great images is the desired result, John aims to makes the entire work experience as smooth as possible for his clients.

Working as a professional photographer since 2005, he supports clients with projects in the Washington DC area and beyond. His clients include FOX Architects, KGD Architecture, ktgy, Perkins + Will, RTKL, SmithGroup JJR, Drysdale Inc., Lococo Architects, Anthony Wilder Design Build and many more.
